We have a new teacher in the Science Building! Meet Ms. Yasmin Elasmar. At 28 years old, she recently started working as a chemistry teacher in room 400. Ms.Elasmar used to teach at Cesar E. Chavez Learning Academy located in the Valley. At Caesar E. Chavez Learning Academy Elsamar states, “There was a big emphasis on social-emotional learning, so I felt very connected with my students.” She comes to Marshall hoping to achieve the goal of helping students learn chemistry that will benefit them in their lives and/or careers. She hopes to learn and grow herself, collaborate with other teachers, and bring new and exciting ideas into her classroom environment for her students. She has always worked in small schools and wanted to expand her experience. Coming to Marshall was a way to “make sure I was still learning and growing.”
Ms. Elasmar is a mother to a Chihuahua and Pug mix, otherwise known as a “Chug.” She enjoys taking her chug on walks and is very fond of outdoor activities. She likes to spend her time on bright, nice days, having picnics with her dogs and/or riding her bike. She is keen on reading and is passionate about activism. Specifically, part of her activism focuses on Palestinian and Queer rights because of her personal connection: she is an American of Palestinian descent and a member of the LQBTQ+ community. When asked what other issues are of importance to her, Ms. Elasmar listed: racial injustice, the war on drugs and mass incarceration, the water crisis in Flint, Michigan, as well as many others.
When asked if she enjoyed what Marshall has to offer she answered, “Yes, I like it here, the people here are very sweet, helpful, very welcoming and I enjoy seeing all the different activities that the students are involved in. I also like seeing the kinds of traditions that are held here, that is something new to me because my old school that I taught at did not have these traditions.”
