Since the initial reporting of the story 2 out of the 3 teachers who were at risk at being displaced by LAUSD regained their jobs, unfortunately leaving one teacher without a job.
Wearing red in solidarity, the students missed class to put pressure on the LAUSD (Los Angeles Unified School District) to take action. Their goal is to bring attention to the impact these displacements will cause to the integrated and special education classrooms throughout the school. Marshall recently started a program this year that allows children with special needs to attend general education classes with their peers, giving them greater educational opportunities by allowing them to learn alongside their peers. However, the displacement of the three special education teachers has undermined the program. Now, with only one teacher in these integrated classrooms, many general education teachers have expressed that it has become more difficult to properly assist the needs of both general education and special education students. The lack of Special Education co teachers has left these classrooms troubled, resulting in the malfunction of the previous educational plan that was supposed to help students thrive inclusively. The student-led protests on campus stressed the gravity of the situation. Students who missed class purposefully did so to apply financial pressure on the LAUSD school district, as each missing class, even for one period, impacts the money the school receives from attendance, resulting in a funding loss for the school. The students’ unified chants of, “Greedy greedy Carvalho teachers stay and you must go” echoed throughout the street, calling for the cancellation of the announced displacement of the three teachers as well as restore the stability of the integrated learning system, which has worked for all students. As the protest grew and continued throughout the school day, supporters hoped that their efforts would persuade LAUSD to reverse the teacher displacements.
