The Win~Dow has emerged as one of the frontrunners of the recent smash burger craze. Opened just a few years ago in 2021, the Silverlake location has cemented itself in modern Silverlake culture. Offering traditional smash burgers, fries, and more modern items for relatively low prices, it is a great spot for a quick bite for everyone. Popular social media food critics and locals have flocked to the site to get a taste for themselves, and “have not left disappointed” said a customer we interviewed.
With four current locations; Hollywood, Long Beach, Venice, and Silverlake, the Win~Dow is a part of the American Gonzo Food Corporation, most known for its upscale steakhouse American Beauty. The group also oversees Pitfire Pizza and Superba, serving pizza and pastries, respectively.
Located just off of Sunset Blvd. and Edgecliff Dr. its location is second to none. With its proximity to Sunset Junction, visitors can make a day out of their trip to the Win~Dow, going to vintage clothing stores, retail stores, and nearby shops. While parking is always an issue on such a large street, The Win~dow’s slight distance from the main street means that parking, while not guaranteed, is much more accessible. For Marshall students, the Win~Dow is about a five-minute drive and a thirty-five-minute walk from the front entrance. If public transportation is more your cup of tea, the 182, 2, and 4 bus lines all stop just a few feet away. There is also a large metrobike station located in Triangle Plaza, offering traditional bikes as well as pedal-assisted electric bikes. As a “hole-in-the-wall” style restaurant, they offer plenty of plastic stools as seating that can double as tables if necessary. Its location serves as an integral part of the community, as just a few steps away is the Silverlake farmers market in which vendors fill up Sunset Triangle Plaza every Tuesday and Saturday.
Food
Priced at $4.35, the Win~Dows classic smash burger offers a delicious snack for a great price. The burger comes with cheese, caramelized onions that are smashed into the burger, pickles, and their homemade house sauce. The pickles and house sauce offer a perfect contrast to the burger, cheese, and bread. The caramelized onions also provide some sweet flavor that matches everything very well. For $7.50 they also offer a double cheeseburger. However the double cheeseburger is too rich in meat and cheese, if you’re looking for a filling meal two normal cheeseburgers are the way to go. If you don’t want a burger their chicken sandwich is a perfect other option. Crispy fried chicken on the same Martin’s potato roll with their homemade coleslaw and jalapeno sauce on it. The chicken sandwich is crispy and spicy but lacks a whole lot of other flavor.
Beyond their sandwiches, they offer two different salads. The shaved kale salad, which we tried, had kale, pecorino, lemon vinaigrette, croutons and pine nuts. At only $7.95 the salad is a great option for people who are looking for a healthier option. The lemon vinaigrette and croutons go perfectly with the shaved kale, however it was slightly underdressed. Their $8 grain bowl comes with a brown rice base, veggies, seeds, and a soft egg. The fries that they offer as a side are perfectly crunchy and salty and only cost $3.95. With a side of house sauce, or jalapeno sauce, for 60 cents each, the fries are a great deal. These sauces also work great on the burger or chicken sandwich and add a lot in terms of flavor. They also, for $8.50, offer an impossible burger suited for vegans and vegetarians.
Looking for a sweet treat to follow or accompany your burger and fries? The window has a secondary menu dedicated to milkshakes and ice cream cones. The S’mores milkshake is by far their best option but for $6.00 the strawberry and vanilla bean are both good. The cones are $5.50 and come dipped, you have the choice between Mint cookies and cream, salted caramel, and a peanut buddy dipped cone. If you’re not looking for ice cream or a milkshake but still want something sweet their lemonade is perfect for a hot day. Get it with their iced tea to make an Arnold Palmer that’s a perfect match for their food.
