[LOS ANGELES] – The 2024 Homecoming dance is here! During the party on September 21st, were you dressed like a princess or a frog? Knowing the theme of this year’s Homecoming at John Marshall High School is “A Night In New Orleans.” loosely based on the movie “The Princess and the Frog.” We saw the many outfits shown in the movie and wondered what type of outfits that the students of JMHS were going to be in. We, the Blue Tide, interviewed many students on their opinions about the Fashion trends during the event.
Before the event took place, we interviewed students on their outlook on how kids should dress for homecoming. We Interviewed our first student, Adriano Proenza. He states that “ I feel as if students should dress how they feel comfortable but with a bit of modesty because it is important to keep up the professionalism because this is on school grounds.” Proenza demonstrates that he cares for the students’ comfortability while also respecting the school with it. According to him, we can connect a good description of his expectation of one of the attendees which is Ms. Gema Franco-Ponce. Inspired by Evangeline, the star who was the love of the firefly, Ray. Franco was not only on theme but also praised the other students for being on theme. “I think a lot of people fit the theme,” she says. Though when interviewing other students there was a bit of a disagreement with this topic. “No, not really, I didn’t really see a lot of it, I just only saw some.” said Keith Davis, a junior in the SAS program, whose partner, Aris Vergara, another junior, agreed. Wearing a matching set, Vergara wore a blue sparkly dress whereas Davis wore a Blue suit, complementing each other’s outfits during the event.
Another student who attended the event was Jacqueline Beatriz Yumul, a 10th grader in the SAS program. When asked who she was inspired by she answered, “I’m inspired by my Dad telling me to wear the Frog onesie. ” She had empathy for her dad and the homecoming theme. “I didn’t want to be a princess so I decided to come as a frog.” she continued. To her, she knew that the event was formal but she didn’t think it would be really formal, connecting to the past interviews on the topic of if everyone is on theme she states that most of the people here are on theme.
Ending the night off, we interviewed one of the front seats of homecoming. A part of ASB and a freshmen Magnet student, James Sision had a thought when interviewed. “ People should dress in a nice suit or nice formal clothing so that they can represent Hoco. though i feel like they can dress in whatever clothing but formal would be the best because it’s the only dance of the year for anyone excluding prom which is for the seniors.” he concluded. Running the food booth, James made this night go without a hitch by keeping up with students, giving out food, controlling money while selling said food, and overall just being there for ASB during homecoming all while wearing a white dress top, black tie, and finally black pants and shoes to fit the event all together.
This year’s Homecoming has been incredible with everyone’s creativity with the theme. For years to come we hope that the students of JMHS up the stakes on these amazing fashion trends. Though of course not everyone should be subjected to a theme, it’s nice to see that kids are contributing their outfits with their school spirit.
