Kura Revolving Sushi is one of the many food offerings at the Glendale Galleria, frequented by Marshall students. For those who have never been, it’s a novel concept where endless sushi plates are brought to you on a rotating conveyor belt, letting you pick and choose which plates you like. But with such an enormous selection of dishes possible, deciding which to start with may be difficult. Here’s a deeper dive into some of the highlights of Kura’s menu and what makes this revolving sushi bar such a popular choice amongst Marshall students.
The best item on the menu must be the Umami Oil Salmon. This piece is quite a bit different from the other salmon varieties found here, as it’s coated in a savory oil that kicks its flavor up beyond the typical subtleness of regular sushi. The thin cuts of green onion add a refreshing crunch to the dish, elevating the experience even further.
For tuna lovers, Negitoro is an enjoyable departure from the typical slice of meat typically found on the menu. It’s fluffy due to it being minced, yet it lends itself to being an excellent vessel for soy sauce. In contrast, Albacore Toro, or Bintoro, is a rich chunk of fat that virtually melts in the mouth- a sensation unlike any other item on the menu. However, it is unmatched in every aspect compared to the Southern Bluefin Toro. The meat is like the wagyu of the sushi world, falling apart as soon as it lands on your tongue. However, this premium option only comes with a single piece rather than the usual two, however you’ll quickly find yourself picking up another plate.
While Kura’s tuna options shine, the scallop options are limited. The raw scallops are interesting for their jellylike mouthfeel, though their flavor is shallow compared to some of the other options on this menu. Even the seared scallops, with mayo atop, don’t bring much to the table. They carry that same liquid-like texture without that elevation of flavor you might expect from cooking.
The Garlic Skipjack Tuna is for those who want something different from the usual. It’s seasoned with quite a bit of pepper, so much so that it might trick you into thinking it was cooked. The Seared Salmon Toro offers a slightly tougher texture than raw salmon, though it still has that rich, oily flavor that makes salmon lovers dream.
The Snow Crab for any crab lover will be a must-have. It explodes with a juicy, big chunk of meat. Although it comes as just one piece, the size of the crab makes up for this, providing a filling enough option for those who like bigger mouthfuls. The Yellowtail on the other hand, is a dependable choice for anyone because it has a light, inoffensive flavor.
Some options just aren’t up to scuff. For instance, Octopus isn’t tender; it’s chewy with a somewhat rubbery texture that is not to everyone’s taste. Likewise, the Squid leaves much to be desired, having a sticky, jellylike consistency with little flavor and a nasty aftertaste. Those can be a potential choice, but with so many other delights on the conveyor belt, it’s easy to pass on them for something more appealing.
Kura has a solid selection of handrolls, although you may not know that as they don’t usually show up on the conveyor. One to note is the Spicy Salmon Hand Roll. Its form allows it to be enjoyed so differently from traditional sushi, while the spicy salmon makes a bold statement and goes really well with the crunchy cucumber tucked inside. It is a personal favorite and a must-try if someone is looking for a different eating experience. The Spicy Tuna Roll, though simpler, is another excellent pick. It’s served in batches of four, perfect for sharing, while the cool crunch of cucumber pairs well with the spiciness of the tuna filling.
For dessert, the strawberry mochi ice cream was delectable. The textural contrast between the soft, chewy exterior and the sweet, creamy ice cream inside was just right to complete one’s meal: cool, refreshing, and above all, delicious, among the top choices of desserts offered at Kura, with two other flavors, being Matcha and black sesame being offered.
Beyond the food, though, Kura’s atmosphere takes it to another level. The restaurant is buzzing, with a great vibe that makes dining with friends or family fun. The revolving sushi concept keeps things fresh and engaging and allows quick, efficient service to ensure you never wait long for your next dish. Couple that modern, upbeat atmosphere with the fact that it is no wonder Kura has become this popular.
Kura Revolving Sushi enables a unique and fun dining experience beyond the food itself. Whether it’s your mouth watering to the richness of Umami Oil Salmon or the peculiar spice of Garlic Skipjack Tuna, there’s sure to be something for everyone. With so much variety, there will always be something you’ll enjoy. Kura is a sushi lover’s paradise with good service, a lively atmosphere, and many options.
