In Los Angeles, California, the first week of September saw temperatures reach skyrocketing heights. Temperatures increased steadily throughout the week, until they surpassed double digits, and climaxed at an astonishing 101 degrees Fahrenheit on Friday, September 6. The National Weather Service sent out excessive heat warnings for the later half of the week, as a result of these high temperatures. In accordance with the blistering heat wave that swept through the Los Feliz area, club rush at John Marshall High School had been postponed from September 6, 2024 to September 19, 2024.
Scheduled to occur during lunch on the volleyball courts, students and staff alike agreed to postpone club rush for the time being in an effort to keep members of the Marshall community cool and in the shade amidst the excessive heat. According to ASB president Aiden Warner, “we believed it would be too hot for students to comfortably enjoy the activity and talk to each other while it was so hot. This led to our decision to choose a cooler day.”
John Marshall High School staff then made the unanimous decision to push back club rush two weeks, which would allow the temperature to cool down to a comfortable level. On September 19, 2024 temperatures dropped a whopping 30 degrees, allowing club rush to be a go!
Students passed by booths set up by the numerous different clubs at Marshall, and gained a variety of information on what each club is about. Students easily passed from booth to booth without having to deal with the scorching temperatures that plagued the original club rush.
