With Mothers Day approaching, students share what makes this day special every year, what they plan to do with their moms and what they recommend others to do for their moms.
Students' Thoughts and Ideas for Mother's Day

With Mothers Day occurring on May 11, 2025, I talked with seniors Gabriel Hidalgo, Yesenia Martinez and Cuauhtemoc Moreau on their thoughts about Mothers Day, and what they planned on doing this year for their mothers. Along with other ideas which they recommend others do for their mothers this Mothers Day.

All interviewees agreed that Mothers Day was special for them and their mothers. With Hidalgo saying, “…I get to show my mom how much I appreciate her, more than I do everyday. It’s an excuse to do something grand,” with Moreau adding “I think having a day just to appreciate my mom is one of the best things.”

Interviewees when talking about what they would do for their mothers, largely agreed on going out to eat, or buying gifts. With Hidalgo commenting that he would, “Taking [mom] out to eat at her favorite spot, buying her some flowers and chocolate strawberries with my dad.” While Martinez said that she would, “Eating out [with mom] and just spending the day doing what she wants.” With Moreau adding that she would spend Mothers Day, “Spending time with her at a restaurant she likes is a tradition we have.”

Lastly, interviewees recommended some ideas for others who were unsure on what to do for their mothers this Mothers Day. With Hidalgo recommending doing “…something special, it doesn’t have to be anything big. Even the little things can mean a lot, but don’t do nothing.” With Martinez adding on, suggesting that students “Bake her favorite dessert.”

However these modern material ways of appreciating your mom, differ wildly from the founders of the modern Mothers Day purpose. As our modern interpretation of Mothers Day invented by Anna Jarvis who established the holiday in honor of her mother Ann Jarvis. Mothers Day at first was largely intended to be in honor of Ann Jarvis’s work to bridge families and encourage peace after the Civil War. However today honoring our mothers still remains, but now through more material means and less about their achievements through life and encouraging peace after war.
