Marshall has had a history being rivals with Eagle Rock in boys volleyball, consistently having close, action–packed games. This game was no different, with Marshall losing the final set with a score of 11-15. Marshall had lost seven straight games against Eagle Rock; despite giving their all the team was unable to break the losing streak. In an interview with Michael Alcaide, a starter for the varsity boys volleyball team, he describes why Marshall lost, “I think we lost because we started messing up, fatigue took over and we made bad decisions”.
Alcaide talks about how the boys team had a bad mentality around the fourth set. He talks about what the team could’ve done differently, “Remember our responsibilities and trust our teammates, also learn to stay loud and shake off simple mistakes and move on to the next point”. Many players including Alcaide believe that if the Marshall team didn’t become discouraged during the fourth set, then the team would’ve been victorious against Eagle Rock.
Marshall first had a lead over Eagle Rock, winning two sets and only losing one. Unfortunately for Marshall, it seems like fatigue and exhaustion got the better of them, causing them to lose two additional sets. To counter this loss Alcaide also states that the team is working hard to practice, “We’re getting our reps in and making sure to drill these motions into our playstyle.”
Even before the season started the boys team is always practicing and conditions, now more than ever. Michael and the rest of the Barrister boys volleyball team are now coming back from this loss better than ever, and are prepared to face any challenges presented to them in the future.
