After concluding the first week of practice for Powderpuff, coaches, cheerleaders, and flag football players are reflecting on their thoughts and the tradition as a whole.
Powderpuff is a yearly tradition at John Marshall Senior High. The junior and senior classes compete against each other in a flag football game, where the girls play flag football while the guys cheerlead.
Some participants in this year’s Powderpuff include Angelina Valencia, a senior playing flag football as a “…corner and inside receiver.” Luka Lopez Mclean is a senior cheerleader, and Aracely Guzman is a senior cheerleader coach.
When asked how their experience of Powderpuff has been so far, Valencia responded by saying, “Positive! I played flag football at Marshall last year, and it’ll be fun to play with my flag football teammates again, as well as the other girls I don’t really know yet…” Mclean and Guzman also reflected this positive sentiment, stating, “It has been positive because I got to meet new people,” Guzman added, “It has been positive because I got to share my knowledge of cheer.”
Since Powderpuff has been a tradition for many years here at Marshall, the question of whether this tradition should continue should be kept in our changing world. In response, Valencia said, “Yes! I think it’s fun to play and to compete with each other.” Mclean added, “Yes because this practice is good for people. ” Lastly, Guzman stated, “Yes, we should because it’s really fun and helps kids get out of their comfort zones.”
After the first week of practice, the students participating in this year’s Powderpuff expressed their positive outlook on the tradition and excitement in the following practices and the event ahead.
