Starting in January, Teacher Barish’s students have been preparing for an end of year fashion show. Students in their first and second period Design Craft classes have been tasked with designing an outfit that will walk the runway.
The class offers fabrics and sewing machines that students can use to make individual pieces of clothing for their outfit. From pants to dresses to jackets, students in the class are making it all.
But it’s not exactly a “make whatever you want” situation. Although they have been granted creative freedom they still must follow a theme agreed upon by both classes. Students pooled their ideas and then voted to decide what the theme will be for the fashion show.
At the end of the first semester, after being given a day to vote for one of five different themes, students unanimously chose Hunger Games and the 12 Districts. Once this was decided the students of the class went to the drawing board, coming up with ideas of clothing pieces and complete outfits. They went over materials and tools needed to make them and just how long it might take.
Then the measurements began, finding models for the clothing pieces and their measurements proved a challenge, many students have decided to model their own pieces and walk the runway themselves.
Once the measurements were taken and the students knew what they were going to make, they began on their first pieces. Cutting out paper pieces to trace onto Muslin, a type of fabric used to see what a piece of clothing will look like when sewn together. If it doesn’tdosent fit correctly or needs a revision, then it’s back to the drawing board to fix whatever issue it may be.
Once the muslin pieces are finalized students will move on to their final pisces, design pants, shirts, jackets, dresses, and more for the final fit. From here it’s on to the runway to show off the fruits of their labor and time.
