Thanks to the district’s Cultural Arts Passport Program (CAP), a handful of Marshall students, including members of the filmmaking class (Campus News) and the Black Student Union were able to see one of the most sought-after holiday shows: The Hot Chocolate Nutcracker which ran for seven nights at the Redondo Beach Performing Arts Center in Manhattan Beach.
The Hot Chocolate Nutcracker is a re-imagined version of Tchaikovsky’s holiday classic “The Nutcracker.” Kara Johnson and her family are having a Christmas party. She receives a nutcracker doll filled with hot chocolate. After the boisterous party Kara falls asleep the Nutcracker turns into a prince, starting an incredibly fun story.
My favorite characters were the mouse trio, Bucky, Harvey and Shmink and their hilarious dynamic. One of my favorite scenes was the opening scene, almost everyone in the cast is dancing together and the choreography was amazing.
I love how Debbie Allen took a classic and turned it into her own work of art, putting a twist to an already amazing play and somehow making it better.
Next time the show comes to town, be sure to catch it. Find more information here: https://www.debbieallendanceacademy.com/hcnperformances
