With Halloween just wrapping up, we asked a few students to share their thoughts on the holiday, such as on costumes, candy, and other traditions.
Here’s a small sampling of each of their opinions.
Anthony is a big fan of Skittles, regardless of their effects on his eczema. “I love the sensation, having it go from sweet to a sour tartiness; there’s really nothing else like it,” he shared. Although he may not dress up for Halloween, he enjoys seeing the festivities at the Glendale Galleria, where stores such as LEGO and Apple hand out goodies. “It’s cool to see such a variety of things.” When home, his Halloween is a lot more lowkey, where he’s the supplier of treats. In contrast, at school he’s the one plundering his friends and teachers for any sweets they may have. But what’s his favorite part of Halloween? Pigging out on candy he’d never go out of his way to buy.
For Garett, Butterfinger is easily on top. “I don’t know why people hate on Butterfinger, it has a really nice crunch.” Coming from me, an unbiased food critic at the Blue Tide, he’s not wrong. He takes advantage of everyone’s distaste for them, getting good trades with his siblings for them. He’s still getting acclimated to Halloween, as this is his first one ever at school. We asked him what he typically does for Halloween. “Other than trick or treating, which isn’t really a tradition we have, as I used to live in Nigeria, where people don’t celebrate Halloween like that, dressing up is always fun.”
Ryder is the defender of Dots, a candy often brushed off by most trick or treaters. “You never see them anywhere, but they’re in those party packs you only see during Halloween,” he comments. Although he’s stepped away from his tradition of going to Halloween parties, he still enjoys hanging out with friends on the holiday. He had some strong opinions about the school’s policy on costumes. “You can’t bring masks or even toy weapons, like props. They have to appear non-metallic, non-threatening—it’s very restrictive.” Regardless, he has his eyes set on the real star of the show: the candy, not denying his “big-back” energy.
Each of these Marshall students has their own take on Halloween, from Anthony’s stockpile of candy, Garett’s inexperienced appreciation, to Ryder’s time spent with friends. Regardless of one’s thoughts or way of celebrating the holiday, Halloween is sure to be enjoyable for all.
